Beyond the Classroom
 


Program Outcomes

Beyond the Classroom, an upper-level living learning program focuses on student engagement in civil society and nonprofit organizations within a global context. The program faculty and staff have developed learning outcomes along with portfolio-based assessment guidelines that measure problem-solving competencies, written and oral communication skills, a working understanding of civic engagement, and leadership capabilities.

 

Learning Outcomes

Students who successfully complete the Beyond the Classroom Living and Learning Program will be able to fulfill the following five learning outcomes:

 

1. Vision and Motivation: Students will be able to identify the key civic values, attitudes and expectations that motivate them personally as well as others to engage in civic action and leadership.

 

2. Civic and Global Knowledge and Awareness: Students will be able to engage in knowledge building, problem-solving and critical thinking about vital civic and policy issues from the local to the national and global levels.

 

3. Civic Engagement and Action: Students will be able to understand and to apply the concept of civic engagement and strategies for enhancing civic engagement and advancing social justice in different contexts (i.e., global to local; multi-cultural; economic, political, and societal spheres).

 

4. Leadership Skills and Competencies: Students will be able to develop their leadership capacities and skills for fostering civil discourse and effective professional practices in the nonprofit and civil society sector; and

 

5. Personal and Professional Development: Students will be able to prepare a professional portfolio (i.e., cover letter, resume, writing sample) and develop their communication and writing skills for internship and career opportunities.
